Mammon

We've been watching a video series at church the past few weeks. The pastor in the series is Robert Morris (theblessedlife.com), and he's been talking about tithing.

Today he spoke about Luke 16:9 and Matthew 6:24. The word mammon is in both of these, and Robert explained them a little further. Mammon can roughly be translated into the lust for money, and it's not the easiest thing in the world to figure out this parable. I looked online and in my study bible to follow up on today's message.

Here's what my study bible says, "We are to make wise use of the financial opportunities we have, not to earn heaven, but so that heaven will be a welcome experience for those we help. If we use our money to help those in need or to help others find Christ, our earthly investment will bring eternal benefit. When we obey God's will, the unselfish use of possessions will follow."

Robert talked about how we must tithe, so that all of our money is blessed. He talked about using the 90% left over for whatever we wanted, because we had obeyed God with our first fruits (10% tithe). I'm reading his book, and it's interesting how he's given away so much in his life and it just keeps coming back to him.

He also talked about not being fooled by mammon - it cannot give you prestige, security, freedom, respect, a better marriage or happiness - all of that comes from God.

I've really enjoyed his video series...
